A La Nina climate pattern has appeared in the Pacific Ocean, which could lead to an increase in activity during the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season and create conditions more prone to wildfires out West, forecasters say.
La Nina, Spanish for “little girl,” is a naturally occurring phenomenon in which sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific Ocean are cooler than average, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It’s the opposite of the warmer-than-average “El Nino” -- and scientists believe this time the pattern will last through at least February.
“La Nina can contribute to an increase in Atlantic hurricane activity by weakening the wind shear over the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic Basin, which enables storms to develop and intensify,” Mike Halpert, the deputy director of NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said in a statement.

So prepare yourselves especially if you live along the coast, guys!

In the winter, the La Nina phenomenon usually brings more precipitation and colder-than-usual temperatures across the northern U.S., with the opposite happening across southern states.

That's in the US but down here in Costa Rica it always gets kind of cold or sultry depending on your location and quite rainy for sure.

That reminds me of what happened down here in Southern Costa Rica, some Haitian immigrants burned their shelter and escaped claiming they were tired of waiting the day they would be able to reach the Northern border shared with Nicaragua. Poor people! They ignore Ortega is the worst president in Central America after Noriega had been arrested in Panama long ago. If he EVER let them go through his country, they could easily catch the coronavirus and get no medical assistance.

Belarusian authorities detained scores of demonstrators Friday while seeking to end more than a month of protests against the country’s authoritarian president, who is set to visit Russia to help shore up his hold on power after 26 years in office.

So he's gonna run to ask his protector Putin to safe him from being kicked out of power in Belarus. Maduro did the same some time ago. This would make Lukashenko the second tyrant looking for Russia's assistance. Anyway Russia had already offered him to send Russian cops to help him stop public protests.

Prosecutors have launched a criminal probe against top members of the Coordination Council created by the opposition to push for a new election, accusing them of undermining national security.
All of the council’s senior members except for Nobel Prize-winning writer Svetlana Alexievich have been either jailed or forcibly expelled from the country. Unidentified people attempted Wednesday to enter Alexievich’s apartment in Minsk, and diplomats from several European Union nations gathered there to prevent her detention and again on Thursday evening.

Well, it seems things are still excessively ugly for Belarusians. What's gonna happen on Sunday when another large mass will gather in their capital city to urge the authority to make changes and new elections and release the detainees?

In an interview with Russian television stations earlier this week, Lukashenko ruled out a full merger of Belarus and Russia but spoke in favor of closer integration.
