Yep, everyone's been doing the Holiday thing, so December usually goes through a slowdown.
As far as the Mayans 'Cancelling Christmas'... Sure they had an 'End of the Era' prediction, but they have predictions for a good 1200 years later. It was an astronomical prediction.
