Temporal Conflict

A project I have wanted to start for so long, yet I have yet to start because..... video game engine hunting. But it doesn't mean I can't bring it up in the Upcoming Projects thread.

About

Fighting Festivalis is my biggest project I've yet to reveal much details about, because I haven't actually started. Originally called TEMPORAL - TIME AND SPACE, Fighting Festivalis will be a massive crossover between worlds. Unlike how the other games that do a worlds cross over (Heroes of the Storm, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, etc.), I wanted to do something different with the Fighting Game Genre, heck. Any of the gaming genres at all. Being my first major commercial project, I am very nervous that it's not going to skyrocket, but that's okay because I'm not actually predicting that it will sell well anyway when I get to developing it.

Story

A scientist of a world has found a discovery. The worldly link between worlds and their timelines. So he made a project. This project is called Temporal. When the project began, they made a big machine which merges the various worlds into one, having the scientist's world as the catalyst for this new world. Years later, all the worlds have merged, and stories have crossed paths with each other. Their fates and destinies remain the same.

Planned Features
  • A Story mode, which tells the story of certain individuals from their own stories, to the end of the Temporal Project
  • Unlockables! Characters and Other Story campaigns will be available as you play. Unlock enough characters, and you may get a new Story campaign.
  • Arcade mode! Complete with an Arcade Ending!
  • Tourney and League Modes! Make a Tournament, or try going in a League.
  • Profiles and Team Profiles! Make a profile for yourself, or make one for a team comprised of you and your friends!
  • Character Types! Each character is unique. There are three types. Power, Speed, and Balance.
  • Mini Games! Child friendly mini games in case you, your wife/husband, and your kids don't want to play the actual game
  • Adventure Mode! Play alone, or with a friend and roam around the world of Temporal, fight, level up, and explore the world and see if you can find what you're looking for.
I do have about a few things planned. One of them are Starter Packs, which I'll try to explain in this next section.

The Concept and the game play mechanic concepts. (These are planned)

First of all, I bet you're wondering about Starter Packs. Starter Packs is a piece already unlocked for you in the game. These packs come with a unique intro to that pack, as well as characters from the story/world/universe which the Pack focuses on.

The second is the unlockable story campaigns and characters. By buying a Starter Pack, you have the full game. You don't really need to buy another Starter Pack. However if you do buy another Starter Pack, then the new Starter Pack recognizes your other Starter Pack, and will have the contents that you unlocked from that older Starter Pack into the new one you bought when you start. So you won't be completely starting over. Campaign stories unlocked will also carry over. Afterwards, you don't have to do anything else.

The third I want to explain are character types. There are three types. And these are as follows:
  • Power Type - This type of character cannot make big combos, but are made up for it in their hard hitting attacks. This type of character can also guard against attacks a bit better than the other three types as well. Their power is increased by how much the Energy bar is filled. This character type is a bit hard to master due to their slow attacks, leaving them more open. However, they won't stagger a lot unlike the other two types.
  • Balance Type - The most adaptive type of characters. They can make combos, and are the easier to learn than the other two types. They have a balance of Attack, Speed, and Defense.
  • Speed Type - Though weaker in terms of Attack, their combos make up for it. This character type can dish out lengthy combos. As such, their attacks can get lengthier by how filled the Energy Bar is. One Charge = More speed, which also means more lengthier combos. This type of character is hard to master in comparison of the other two. The Speed Type has the same Defense as the Balanced Type.
The Adventure Mode is an RPG-esk adventure where you can choose any character you have unlocked, and use them to start and adventure. The adventure ends if you lose though, but you keep any spoils you have before losing. That way, you won't have to grind all of that up again and keep improving. The characters level up by EXP, similar to that of an RPG. In this mode, the character you choose will have to learn the Abilities they know in the other modes by leveling up.

Possible Questions and Answers

Q. Will you be putting other packs/characters in as Paid DLC?
A. Nope. Like I said before, every pack in the game is in each pack. Each Pack has a different set of Starter Characters and Campaign mode. It's possible to unlock them all in one pack without having to buy another one.

Q. Will you be monetizing the game by adding Microtransactions such as Characters and Loot Boxes?
A. **** no!!! I make games for people to have fun, not make a ****ing business model out of it! Besides, I'll probably get more profit by just releasing each pack of characters separately! It's YOUR job to unlock the characters, stages, and campaigns from the other starter packs with the Starter Pack you have! Not mine, or a company!

Q. Are you going to add a DRM, making the game sh*t?
A. Nope. But I will have a surprise for pirates pirating the game upon release. and I'm not going to tell anyone that.

Q. Is this game going to be Always Online?
A. For a Fighting Game with a single player mode? Are you out of your mind(s)? No!

Q. Will there be an Online Multiplayer Mode?
A. I cannot answer that at this time. Maybe when the game gets released, and more Starter Packs are released. Then I'll tell you about it.

Q. How many Starter Packs will there be?
A. Right now, only two. Three if my brother and friend would allow me to use their Original Characters.

Q. Why make Starter Packs?
A. I think of this project as a passion project. A Project where I will go around the world and ask companies to make the game world of Temporal bigger. I hope to realize this. Non-commercial game devs, Indie game devs, AAA game devs, and publisher, and non game Project creations and characters in one crossover of infinite possibilities. I want to merge all game worlds I can starting with no budget and borders. A true masterpiece with no DLC and Microtransactions. How a game is supposed to be finished and expanded upon.... until the inevitable end to a story. After that... well... that's for a different time. Also it's because I want to try a Pokemon-ish releasing, but will everything unlockable with one game.

Q. When the game is released, and you make a new Starter Pack, Will there be an update to the other packs?
A. When I release the first Starter Packs of Fighting Festivalis, That's the finish of development of the game, bugs or no bugs. When I release a new Starter Pack, Yes. I will update the older packs to expand them. No paid DLC even involved as everything will be unlockable from your starting point. So don't worry. you won't have to buy the newest pack if you don't want to.

Q. Will that mean I'll be able to fight Mario in a PS4 or PC game?
A. Sadly, I'm gonna have to say no, unless Nintendo and Sony allow this. Other than that, if I make Starter Packs that are console exclusive, they're going to stay on the console those properties are exclusive to. So Mario will stay on Nintendo Consoles, and let's say Ratchet, from the Ratchet & Clank series, will forever remain PS exclusive. Howver, don't count this as Ratchet and Mario Starter Packs Confirmed. This was an example. about the Exclusivity subject. I may not get permission for those IPs and characters.

I guess that's it for now. Now to find a good engine to bring my idea into a reality with.

Here's a Bump no one saw coming.

So I decided to take a break from Memorie, and RPG Maker in general, and go engine Hunting for this game. I planned this game to be a Fighting game, and it'll be my first commercial project so M.U.G.E.N is not going to be used for this. However, A site only lead me to the Unreal Engine, and I'm not sure I have any knowledge of making a game with that engine.

After I find an engine, though by the looks of things I might end up using the Unreal Engine if I can't find anything easier, I'll be focusing a bit on drawing and Spriting. As I plan for the characters to be 2D Sprites in a 3D Map. While I'm doing that, I should probably hire a small team or something. I don't know coding, I can't compose any music, and mostly I'll probably be bad at pretty much a lot of things if I go solo on this one. Happy with a sweat

I'll confirm right here that characters from both Memorie and Area 99 projects are going to be in the game. The cast from Memorie will be a year older, though Akiko will be two years older, as the events from the upcoming RPG Maker game would already have happened, and the characters have a year breather.

Area 99 will have no time skipping as it'll be a slight continuation for them.

Based on my preferences for this game, the characters will be 2D Sprites, while the stages will be in 3D, I already put that, but it's a reminder.

That's pretty much it for now, I had more plans, but I'll have to rethink them. Welp, back to engine hunting.

Well. During my Game Engine Search, I found a few, but mostly it denounced to Unity and the Unreal Engine. I'll keep looking a little bit more.

As long as you don't go 100% stock with Unity and end up on John Wolfe's youtube channel. Winking

Hmmmm.... This is going to be a tough debate to decide.

Still debating on which of the two game engines to use, but I had a new plan finalized thought up.

This has to be for characters, that will be in the game, and the way to unlock them.

No this is neither a DLC thing nor a Microtransactions thing. I'm not some greedy guy that will make you pay $1 for a simple red dot.

Anyway back to the way to unlock them. Like I said earlier, the starter characters and campaign stories are separated via, Starter Packs. Which is kind of Fire Emblem Fates-ish, but not quite. It'll be quite easy to get characters you don't have unlocked, even those from a different pack. All you have to do......

Is pretty much fight one game match against them if you come across them. Win, or lose, you'll get the character you don't have. However, I am thinking of a tutorial , which has a character you would not have as the opponent against a character you start with. Completing the Tutorial won't give you that character though. I'll mention that in a tutorial when I start the development of one.

If I make a new starter pack, I'll make an update to the game to add the new pack into the game, and gives new characters to unlock the same way you unlocked other characters.

As for the campaign unlocking, for all starter packs, you'll unlock the campaigns you don't have by unlocking all the key cast that show up in that campaign story. After that, you get the story.

Wow this game's going to be unlock city by the time I finish! I hope it'll all be worth it in the end.

That's pretty much it for now. I'm going to keep debating on game engines, while doing other things, for now.

While I'm debating, I'd like to hear your thoughts about this, or any interesting, non greedy, ideas I could add to the game when development starts (I'll consider it and see if I can with the chosen game engine).

Still debating, but I have one small update on my Engine Hunting progress.

Still trying to decide, but instead of deciding out of the blue, I'm going to try the two engines, see how they work, and go from there. Though a lot of games have been made with the two engines, the most noticable one would be the recently released Kingdom Hearts III that uses the Unreal Engine, it'd be best to know what I'm going to see, and see if I need a middle mouse click or not. My middle mouse click doesn't work, so I hope there's some sort of workaround for that.

The first Game Engine I'll try is the Unreal Engine, since I have the Epic Games Launcher installed on my dad's PC for the freebie games they're giving out. The next one will probably be Unity. I'm not going to make two versions of the same game, however, more like I'm going to see how they both work, and see which one would be better for the project.

Looks like I am still deciding, even after some turns of events.

So here's where I'm at at my decision.... Still undecided. For two reasons.

1. Epic Games released an update to the Unreal Engine.
Seriously? Welp, it wouldn't hurt to do a fresh install, I guess. Then re-trying out with the engine for real. As you might have noticed, I've been grabbing their free assets, just for the heck of it. Didn't get the free Paragon assets though.

2. Couldn't get Unity due the site going blank some time ago. but it appears I can now. So I got the Setup ready and waiting.
This might take a while as I'll have to checkmark things. but I might not check mark all of them. Since the Setup requires the Internet to download the engine, installing this will be last.

Hopefully, I can make a decision after trying them out. Welp, Better get started when I'm more awake, and get them both installed.

Still though. It is kind of neat that both companies behind these engines are letting people use them for free. But really, think of all the possibilities I could make with these... If I figure them all out that is.

Now here's to make note: I will have to make these games under the specs of whatever PC I have, whether it's a potato, or a supercomputer. So if I choose between the two, just remember that the game may not be pretty due to the lowest spec PC I have, just so I can play the project on that low spec PC.

Looks like I messed up again, My bad. The one I had installed, that I thought was an update, was an earlier version. the newest one was 4.21.2, the version I had installed all that time. all this time I thought that 4.20.3 was the new version for the Unreal Engine. I'm gonna have to reinstall Unreal Engine version 4.21.2 due to the slight misunderstanding.

Back to the hiatus block for a month

Taking a month's break of debating, due to me going to be away from my dad's PC, which I installed both engines on. This is because I have to work on valentines day, and I'm technically living in two places. However, when I get back, I'll be focusing on the debate again.
