Nice, this gives me some ideas. I wasn't planning on using parallax background since my port city is pretty close to sea level and you wouldn't get the chance to see the ocean from such a low viewpoint.

But, now that I see how nice it looks I might make a lighthouse or something where you can see into the distance.

This is part of the city I'm working on... It's on the interior of the city, so no water just yet. This is in rm2k3 so bear with me.

No doors or npcs yet, though I don't need them for this part of the game, where it will be at night, raining, and the only people on screen will be guards.

The maps that contain the docks will be more like the one in this tutorial. Any advice?

is that the center of the city?
if it is, then i would recommend that you add a town square(most towns have one), especially a big town like that.
also, its a bad idea to make a city map with no indoor scenes. even though there are no quest events, you could add doors that the player can enter and a few that are locked. This could give the player a sense of realism, as if people really live in this town.
be sure to add at least 2 persons(people are everywhere)... i would take out the middle light post, since you don't want to overcrowd the place.(maybe you will need to actually add light to them later on which could cause lag.)

other than that with the guards you will add, This will be a very good design in my opinion.

Almost forgot, thanks for the comment!!! ^^
If you would like to see another then please request...

It's not the center of the town, but an area off on the west side. There is gonna be a town square.

All your other concerns are already accounted for, I just haven't implemented them yet since I'm only just mapping the city out.

Also, if I don't add some kind of lighting to the lamp posts, the hero will make some kind of witty comment about how they don't do anything.

So, yeah, I'll keep your tutorial in mind as I'm mapping the city out.
