The invasion of Taiwan has become one of the most discussed topics in China after nationalists called on the state to seize the island by force while the world is preoccupied with fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

A growing number of the country’s social media users argue that the virus provides a window of opportunity to invade Taiwan and achieve the national goal of unification. The calls follow decades of state propaganda that has spawned strong support on the mainland for “reunification by force”.
