Have you played Ib? It's pretty good.
It is probably so popular, however, because both the story and game last only long enough to get players invested. The characters are interesting but our time with them is brief. So we want more. Hence, fan works. Really, the same kind of thing can be said for Touhou as well.
Grandia on the other hand, is an X-ty hour long game. By the end of the interesting character interactions have been used up. So while it probably feels more satisfying, it's not going to inspire many players to write more.

not only that a lot of people seem to like psychological horror/thrillers in general.

That I would actually dissagree with ôo
I can really only speak for the first one, as that is the only one I've fully completed, but it is one of the very few games that answered enough questions to be not left confused by the end, yet has so many things which are unkown factors, that you can still discuss it in great detail and turn into story.
Personally I believe it has probably more to do with the time it was released. Most "currently trendy" fandoms get a larger group of people devoting their time to it in one way or an other then things which have passed this stage.
Grandia was just my example, I could have named other things as well, including and excluding games.
As for the question about having played Ib: so far I have not. I want to see the Let's Player I've found it trough finish it first, then I'll try my hand at it, see if I can get a diffrent ending.
Also, by that time my PC will hopefully be fixed again, so that I can instlall the corresponding RTP again XD' For now, it would be unplayable.
Also on my mind is a story I am working on. I am beginning to doubt that I can finish it before my hollidays are over, so I really hope I get as much of it done as I can.

man, i'm tired of games that start with people "going on adventures", it's lost all it's lustre to me.it doesn't help either that i'm an experienced troper who can see tropes miles away.
I read all the endings btw, just saying...
and there are many...
and i wonder if this game would be better if it was remade into XP or VX or something...

Well... To continue this trend of computers dying...
My laptop might be on its way out, I think the fan has stopped working.
I have another computer (my main, new one in fact) but I use the laptop for media (videos, general chatting etc) because it's not a power hog like my PC (the desktop PC uses a 750Watt pcu, the laptop's maximum draw is 140Watts! My I7 uses that on its own.)
So... We'll see. But I'm going to try and back everything up asap, hopefully before it goes into meltdown.
EDIT:
Update. Restarting got the fan going again. Hopefully I will have time before it dies completely. Thing is, I NEED 2 different computers. As a trainee teacher and eventually an actual teacher, I'll need a laptop for work related stuff. *sigh*
Another unexpected expenditure. Just what I needed.

computers keep dying :)
mine's coolant system is broken, the battery has been dead for god knows how long so it only works plugged in. My A-key is half dead (though that was the case when I bought it).
Waiting for the delivery of my new lappy though + I got a (2 year old) free desktop off my work cuz they had one left ^^

well, looks like i'll never finish Ib, cause as soon as i get the red rose, the damn game lags heavily on me, and nothing I can do stops it, not going min. screen, not restarting, nothing, and i'm not the only oe who gets this problem, but there are no answers.

Installed nearly 1000 fonts today. now its morning and Im drinking coffee. I got up too early for my liking. Im going to slip back into sleeping in the morning agian I feel. It always happens whenever I correct my sleeping. somewhat annoying.
