 Spinel's Core [Ch. 1-3]
#1

Plot Synopsis

The story takes place in a continent called Navina. Ruled by a righteous and intelligent Emperor, everything is peaceful. But there is talk amongst the people. Is the Emperor searching for something? All around the continent, there are towns "recruiting" young men for mines. What is the purpose of his activities?

You play as Marcus, an enslaved young man forced to work in the Golmar Mines. One day, after accidentally "using illegal magic", he's banished from the village. After meeting an intelligent girl called Elea and her powerful aunt, Thelma, he is offered a trip to the main continent from his island.

But before they can leave, a mysterious band kidnaps Thelma and sails away. Marc and Elea are forced to embark on a wild-goose chase after the strange foes. Along the way, they will confront enemies and learn dark secrets. As they join up with old friends and cross the continent, they discover horrors they've never seen or heard before-- like corrupted slavers and bloody warfare.

However, when they finally discover the jail where Thelma was being kept, they realize their real adventure has yet to start. The location of the Spinel (a powerful redgem used for Alchemy) has been revealed. They must journey once again to a city to stop the enemy from obtaining the Spinel and try and end mining once and for all.

Features

Spinel's Core is an interactive, cinematic project, in which I am practicing a combination of gameplay and story-telling. The game has a very linear storyline, but also many interactive dungeons, puzzles, and mini-games along the way.

The evented title map.

It uses a heavily modified ABS (action battle system) where you fight enemies on the map.
It's very simplified and involves no numbers (other than the health bar).

An example of interaction with events on the map-- in this case,
picking at a rock in the Golmar Mines.

As you progress throughout the game, you can get up to four party members.
Each has a unique weapon and skills; you can switch them out in the menu.

Elea, your novice alchemist, tries out her "Gust" skill during the Boret escape.

You also collect a variety of Tools, which all characters can use. These will be very important when solving puzzles or defeating
strategic boss battles in dungeons.
There is no leveling and no exp. Why? You get a more realistic feel, and it's much more simplified. Battles are fought solely for Coins (the currency), items, or recovery. No grinding is necessary.

Alchemy?
Alchemy is the magic of withdrawing energy from objects and manipulating matter with it. This is, however, a much more difficult profession than it seems. You can only cast magic equivalent to the amount of energy you withdraw, and most objects don't have much energy to start with. Many spells fail because their energy-host does not contain enough energy. For this reason, alchemists use redgems, or special minerals mined from the earth that contain high levels of energy for magic.

In the game, your redgem is your EP (energy point) bar. You can use any spell you know if you have a redgem equipped, but be wary. If the redgem's energy is completely sapped, you will not be able to "alchie" again for a few minutes. Luckily, redgems slowly regenerate energy when not in use. There are seven redgems you can collect on this adventure, each providing more and more energy than the previous.

Sorcery, on the other hand, is the magic of manipulating humans or other living creatures. Theoretically, by doing this, you can weaken, strengthen, poison, or even kill other animals. Likewise, sorcery also could heal and revive them. Because of this, sorcery was outlawed and declared illegal magic. Any human caught practicing this art would be sentenced immediately to death.

Other Notes

This game will be released in three Books, with several Chapters in between.

Currently, the CMS is incomplete-- which means you will not be able to use items or equip tools and skills. For now, your friend Aluxes will be around areas where this is needed. Simply talk to him and he will equip these things for you.

The HUD and a few other graphics are temporary placeholders. A new one will be made.

The battle system controls were designed for keyboard use. If you are using a gamepad and you find the controls uncomfortable, PM me or tell me in the thread.
