Martin Mais created a tool a few years ago to aid in the creation of (mostly PVGames assets) and generating character sprites, level editing, and a few more necessary items. In my opinion, this was done in the aftermath of the non-communication of the original PVGames Character editor made in Java by Alexander Schmidt.

One aspect of this software that I personally enjoy is the ability of the software to take cells from specific coordinates of super spritesheets from PVGames 2.5d spritesheets and utilize that to create any number of the poses and similar spritesheets needed for a project. I also believe that with some effort, this MAY be able to be utulized for my own spritesheet format once that gets finalized. As my own project looks to utilize 100 different spritesheets, it could be invaluable to me.

Currently this tool directly supports assets made by PVGames in the Medieval Series, the Mythos Awakening Series, and the 2.5d system, as well as
- Iknowkingrabbit's (Alexander Makarov's) Heroic Assets series

Roole Game Engine

You are free to visit its GitHub Repository

Introduction

Well, you know me, I love dealing with a couple of game engines. This is especially true if talking about Linux or Cross Platform applications. There are a few based on Ruby either completely or partially and Roole is no exception here.

Roole's source code is based on Ruby Gosu. This other engine depends on SWIG to make it work on any computer. Roole does not care about it for it has been implemented on custom Ruby and CRuby and C++ code instead of using any large glue code like SWIG's.

It is called Roole because it is based on Ruby...
In the future it can be used to make your custom Role Play Games
And perhaps because it rules to make a open source engine?

Warning!

You will need to compile it yourself on your OS in order to be able to actually play with it.

Don't worry!

You can clone my repository on your PC or download it as a ZIP file.

So far I can guarantee it should work on several Linux distros because Gosu already does that.
I am unsure if I will be able to compile it for Windows but you still can do it yourself.

Kicking SWIG's Ass for Good!

Usually experienced programmers would prefer to implement a library like SWIG to make it cross platform but it really gets in your way when trying to compile any project using recent versions of Ruby. Plus it adds LOTS of unoptimized code that makes it run functions that expect you to pass several parameters only to later tell you it only accepted 0 or 1 or 2 arguments at most. Seriously, SWIG?

Since I have already met with programmers that deeply hate SWIG if we are talking about medium sized and large projects, well, I am trashing it here.

What exactly are you able to do with Roole?

Good question! I guess it's pretty much the same you can do with any Ruby Gosu project.

Load any kind of Pictures stores in JPG or PNG or TGA formats AFAIK

Load and play any MP3 or OGG soundtrack

Display text on screen using Normal, Bold, Italic and Underline styles

No predefined Game Window Size!
You can change it via scripts and the engine will read it BEFORE it launches the game window!

Execute as many custom Ruby scripts as you wish!
Just create a load.txt Text File and add the paths to all of your scripts.
No file extension is needed there.
Do not forget to leave an empty line at the bottom of this file.

Because it features a TrueType binding as the library in charge of all string characters to be rendered on screen, it's not possible to offer you some Outline style by default.

Default Scripts

In Roole Game Engine's case it'd be...

Code:

Code:

Scene.init

Actually it's a hidden script by default. You just need to define the contents of Scene.init method like this
Code:

Code:

module Scene
def self.init
#add your code here if deemed necessary
self.scene = NewScene.new
end
end

How do you close the game without resorting to a hard reset?

Code:

Scene.close

Pretty easy don't you think?

Loading and Caching Pictures

You just need to define the contents of Scene.init method like this
Code:

Code:

module Scene
def self.init
#add your code here if deemed necessary
end
end

How do you close the game without resorting to a hard reset?

Code:

Scene.close

Pretty easy don't you think?

This tool only lets you extract RGSS related scripts from their original containers.
This tool only lets you extract RGSS related scripts from their original containers. It places them in the Scripts folder and leaves a scripts list.txt file where you can check the other they were extracted. What's good about this tool? It looks pretty much like your beloved HiddenChest Engine!

Technical Details

This tool has a native resolution of 1088*608 px... If that reminds you of a certain dreamer... Well, t's mere coincidence!
It's only an extractor, not a compressor of any kind.
The tool will not process anything unless the Scripts directory has been deleted by the user himself or herself.
So this way you can't blame me for deleting your beloved scripts!
It will show you a warning message in case you forgot you needed some darn Scripts.extension file to decrypt.
HiddenScript Extractor is NOT a Player Engine!

Since version 1.0.3 it runs on Ruby 2.7!

Today, I tried to adapt on RMXP a script I use each time I work on RPG Maker VX Ace projects : The Scripts-Externalizer.
It is a scripter tool, allowing you to extract all the scripts from the Scripts.rvdata2 file into a given folder and its subfolders, organizing your scripts by categories. The scripts are externalized in ruby files (.rb), and then, loaded by your project.
This script allows you to use the IDE of your choice instead of the original RPG Maker script editor.

-

It's now adapted to RMXP and it works the same way : You extract from the Scripts.rxdata, you get your externalized scripts, you can code your stuff in your IDE and test, and when you want to release your game, you compile your scripts back to the Scripts.rxdata file.

GitHub

scripts-externalizer-XP

Instructions are in the Readme.md on the GitHub (i modified the original one a few to match RMXP visuals & data format, I'll rework it maybe).

I tested it with HiddenChest, and as I expected, it worked fine.
I'll enjoy working that way on XP, I think. I needed to share this tool.

(As i saw on the official thread, to make Win32API work, I had to use a vanilla-RM Game executable to launch the script, before switching back to HiddenChest, it's the only [minor] "disadvantage")
