Should we edit Wikipedia and other websites? - kyonides - 03-08-2020

Should we update data on Wikipedia and other websites?
Confused
I don't mean that we'll always edit open or collaborative websites but I've been wondering if it's convenient to partake in such a free enterprise. Confused You know, I'm editing Wikipedia and sending reports to Worldometers.info concerning the 2019 coronavirus outbreak. Laughing That started making me feel as if I were some sort of traitor. Sad

Do you think it's the right thing to do?

Is it just fine?

Or should we never get involved there? Confused

Should other people handle it instead?

Please post your answers and suggestions here. Nonetheless, I'd prefer not to find any single track of destructive criticism or single-word replies here.

I know nothing bad will ever happen to me if I provide accurate sources to justify my edits or reports but I'd still wanna take some time to read your opinions, guys.

I would be hesitant. To be honest, one must question sources rigorously (I hate this library's keyboard). According to many reports, false and misleading information about Covid has been reported more than legitimate and factual content. According to Newsguard, false and misleading reports have been made over 140 times that of correct information.

Look at the news for Africa for example. Africans are more resistant? False - Garlic or Pepper Sup cures Covid? False - Nigerian Evangelist Preacher goes to China to eradicate Covid and dies? False

A lot of misleading information circulates, even by sources people may trust. However, the interet is replete with people wishing to share unaware if it is fact or fiction.

Of course, another issue would be that the Wikipedia is wholly editable by everyone. If you wish to promote one story, and someone else thinks it is wrong because they read something to the contrary, your content may be erased. Viewpoints, opinions, facts, bios... it is fully editable and susceptible to abuse.

Well, "in my defense" I gotta say I only submitted brief confirmed cases reports and a request to update the total count of confirmed cases in Costa Rica. I don't know what other people might have included and hasn't been confirmed yet... Confused

After weeks of editing the coronavirus pandemic articles in Wikipedia English and Spanish, I no longer feel bad about it.
Perhaps you could say I've become so bold that I'm feeling adventurous now! Pirate
Nowadays I think I'm helping the community by double checking and adding articles paragraphs, notes, and references, fixing typos and even adding good looking charts! Shocked
OK, I feel sad about taking a slight advantage of poor Corona-chan. Sad
Nah, not really! Laughing + Tongue sticking out

Just because you can add and edit content to Wikipedia, so too can others edit content... including yours. Material you posted can be summarily changed under the concept that they are correcting misinformation. Yes, they can replace your information with false statements under the claim that YOU posted misinformation.

Especially if you reply on Corona-Chan's birthplace. She doesn't want you to tell everyone where she was born or ... *GASP* her age!!!!

Be wary.

Well, you ignored that I keep watching over those webpages to make sure they keep accurate and verifiable information on what's happening in Costa Rica during the Corona-chan crisis. Laughing + Tongue sticking out

Shocked You're right, I forgot how she likes to keep such sensitive information secret!

*Adds origin of Corona-chan to his TODO list*
