A new board for Internet necessities anyone? - DerVVulfman - 09-13-2015

What's on my mind?   FORUM stuff!!!   Yay!

Given the attention the Windows 10 thread had garnered, and how other necessary net-sofware related topics may be brought up, I was thinking about a new and separate board.

Giving it a name like 'Net Software Talk' or something,  the idea would be to have a board that would contain discussions about necessary software, be it browsers, antivirus, operating systems (there ya go, netZ!!!), internet providers and file-sharing sites  Not something like your favorite version of fl studio or photoshop, or talk about Ashley Madison.  Basically just those five.  MAYBE...  a sixth called utilities for things like favorite download manager, but solely for internet related thingies.

Yeah... a sixth 'general necessities' would do.

Any thoughts, guys?   What to call it?  Any categories you'd think should be there, or your idea of the category names?  Got any graphics for the prefix icons (16x16 pls)?

I like the idea, but a simpler, more accessible name might be better such as "tech talk", I think. That way it encompasses all what you said and other potentially interesting topics such as PC upgrades, talk on future technologies etc.

I vote for "The Cyber Lounge" just one thing though, about file sharing sites/types of downloads/related what would be the limit? Pirate links, software, downloads, howtos? just asking cause of the legal matters that it could lead to.

Nothing illegal I'm afraid. u_u

I used to run a couple of forums and a website back in the days, and I figured I should bring that up. As far as help and content goes, Im ok with helping around and even posting mini how tos or step by steps when needed, as long as users know I have a life lol

Thanks for the feedback, guys. It was due to both of you that I thought about having this board (apart from Lani who you've been assisting Winking ).

One thing I was considering was a set of Stickied Topics, each pertaining to one of the major categories as a catalog of sorts. As an example, the Anti-Virus stickied topic would give a list of each discussed anti-virus, including their website and available download link. It would be a bit more of a hit-or-miss thing with Operating systems. But the idea would be that our members can see what's available right here. The topics would be locked so one can spam it with 'hey, how about....?

Obviously, the Windows 10 topic will be moved to its new home when done.

Ahh so this is already on the works, alright !!

May I suggest something like
Security
-> Antivirus and Anti Malware
-> Firewalls and VPN (maybe proxies . . . maybe)
with the security root one use for general security subjects than do not directly fall into the sub ones

I think there's a want for such a thing.

Ah, well... Since some Internet Security Suites come with both Antivirus and Firewall software, I guess that heading will cover that too. You may have noticed that a number of boards describe the prefix codes... That's where it'll say that the Security prefix code covers AntiVirus, Firewalls, etc.

Nice suggestions... Firewalls, etc. Winking

Can't stand proxies.... especially Tor proxies. Sarcasm

I'm far from good with proxies but they can be a lifesaver. Still, I would feel a bit bias helping on this matter. Many people just use them to cover tracks during "xyz" activities" and only a handful few uses them as a security measure.

I can tell you one thing, theres always a log that gets made elsewhere (not in the proxy) that can be tracked but thats another story.
