I mainly use larger maps for cities. I don't like having to split a large city into smaller areas, unless there are district like areas in it. Then i may go smaller. I think my largest map is 50x75

my biggest map is 320*220, and that's my world map. normal maps are between about 20*20 and 30*30, except cities. City Maps are little bit bigger, but generaly i don't like too big maps. The reason? I think bigger maps make the area confusing, so I really just use them if I want this to be (like a dark forest).

I think when it comes to larger map sizes, you GOTTA plan ahead. It's not enough to have a large map. You have to design it in a well thought manner.

I've seen some large maps that are wonderfully rendered that are enormous. And I didn't get lost once in there because of the fine attention to detail and visible landmarks. However, I have seen some large maps where the size was not justified and just made the screen look empty... nothing but walls and a few accoutrements.

But if you wanna make mazes... ya gotta go big.

I'm not sure about 30x30s or something that small. I find it odd when the screen scrolls say, 2 spaces. It always seems like the map would have been better as 20x15 without the scrolling. I think they should either span at least two screens, or not scroll at all.

I mainly use small and medium maps (40*40 max) but I sometimes use large maps for cities and towns, especially if they are a main part of the story or a sort of 'hub' for your game.

I personally like a general mix of maps. My largest map so far is about 75x75 and my smallest is 20x15. It does depend on the situation but i personally dont have a world map in my game. I broke it down so i could manage it better. Not to say a world map isn't awesome hence the FF series but it didn't work for me because it was too much to manage at once. It would definitely be wise to do a rough sketch on paper so you have something to reference. Happy mappin' to you all.

I like small maps they are easier to make handle and more fun for me to play on my biggest map right now is 50x50 besides my town map :/ so i have to go small maps i dont like the lag with scrolling

I definitely think smaller maps are better. In terms of creation, I've found that I personally spend more time working on details when I'm making a smaller map. Whenever I have large maps I start to get lazy and don't put as much thought into them as I could. Inside the game, it's better because there's going to be less lag because of fewer events. There are a few different ways to link maps together, both by events and scripts, so I always try to keep maps as small as possible and put them together at the end.

I like designing smaller maps than larger ones, but sometimes large maps are needed. It can be a tedious process, but the results from it afterwards are rewarding.
